You can also click **Delete skill** or **Edit skill** at the bottom of this panel. ## Edit a Skill **Edit** (✎) opens the **Edit skill** screen, with **Details** and **Translations** tabs, and a side panel for **Skill details** and **Collections**. Under **Skill details**, you can update the skill's **Name** (up to 100 characters), **Description** (up to 500 characters), and other details. Thrive detects the skill's original language automatically – confirm it's correct before saving, since it can't be changed afterwards. Click **Save changes** to confirm your edits, or **Cancel** to exit without saving. ## Convert a Skill to a Topic Convert a skill to a topic when it’s a broader subject area – such as company updates or onboarding – rather than a tracked ability. Converting keeps its existing links to content, people, and collections, so you don’t lose them by deleting the skill and recreating it as a topic. In the **Actions** column, click the ellipsis menu (**⋮**) and select **Convert to topic** to change a skill into a topic. In the **Convert skill to topic** popup, click **Convert** to confirm: all content, people, and collections linked to the skill are updated to reflect the topic, and this can't be undone. ## Delete a Skill Click **Delete** (🗑) to remove a skill. The **Delete this skill?** popup lists exactly what will be affected – the number of user profiles, content items, and taxonomy categories the skill will be removed from – before you confirm. This action is permanent and can't be undone. ## Bulk Actions To manage several skills at once, select the checkbox next to each skill. You can then: - **Convert**: Converts the selected skills to topics. This updates all linked content, people, and collections, and can't be undone. - **Merge**: Combines duplicate or near-duplicate skills, such as differently cased or misspelled versions, into one tag, transferring all associations and settings. - **Add to collection**: Adds all selected skills to an existing collection. - **Delete**: Removes all selected skills in one action. ## Export Skills To export the full skill list as a CSV file, click **Export CSV**. This is useful for auditing your skills taxonomy or sharing it outside the platform. ## Taxonomy Tab The **Taxonomy** tab groups your skill tags into categories, so you can manage large skill libraries at scale. Build a hierarchy of categories, then nest skills and other categories beneath them. Categories can be nested up to three levels deep. > [!NOTE] > Note: > > Only skills can be assigned to learners, scored, boosted, or added to profiles. Categories are for organising your skills – they can't be assigned, scored, or boosted. ### Creating a Category 1. On the **Taxonomy** tab, click **+ Create category**. 2. Enter a **Name** for the category. Category names must be unique across your Thrive platform. 3. (Optional) Under **Nest under**, select an existing category to nest this one beneath. A category must already exist to appear here. 4. (Optional) Disable **Translate this category** if you don't want Thrive to translate the category automatically. This is enabled by default. 5. Click **Create category**. The new category appears in the **Skills taxonomy** table, showing its number of sub-categories, skills, and connections. ### Managing a Category Click the menu icon (**⋮**) in the **Actions** column on a category's row to: - **Add category**: Connect an **Existing category** to this one, or add a **New category**. - **Add skill**: Tag an **Existing skill** to this category, or add a **New skill**. - **View details**: Opens the **Category details** panel, showing the category's usage – its number of sub-categories, skills, and connections. - **Edit category**: Change the category's name, nesting, or translations. - **Delete category**: Permanently removes the category. This shows a warning first, listing the skills and content items linked to it – check this before you confirm. ## Permissions Tab The **Permissions** tab controls who can create and manage tags across the platform. ### Restricting Tag Creation Turn on **Restrict learners from modifying or generating tags** to limit tag creation and management to users with admin and tag manager permissions. ### Managing Tag Managers The **Permissions** tab lists your current tag managers, along with their last login. To add a tag manager: 1. On the **Permissions** tab, click **+ Add tag manager**. 2. In the **Add tag managers** modal, search for one or more users by name or email. 3. Click **Add tag managers**. To remove a tag manager, click the bin icon (🗑) on their row.
