Smart Audience Rules: AND & OR Logic

Prev Next

Smart Audience rules give you precise control over audience membership by using AND and OR logic. Rules are organised into rule blocks – groups of conditions that are evaluated together. You can combine multiple rule blocks within a single audience to define multiple qualification paths.

Rule Blocks

A rule block is a group of one or more conditions that defines a specific type of user. For example, one rule block might capture new starters in a specific department, while another captures senior managers with no indirect reports. Each block represents a different group, but all groups belong to the same audience.

In a rule block, conditions follow AND logic – users must meet all conditions in the block to qualify. To add a condition to a block, click + Add another condition.

To add a new rule block, click + Add OR rule block. Rule blocks are separated by OR logic – users who meet the conditions of any rule block will be included in the audience.

AND Logic

Conditions within the same rule block follow AND logic. Users must meet all conditions in the block to qualify.

Example

The following rule block includes only users whose first login was after 8 April 2026 AND who do not have an indirect report:

  • User Activity | First Login | After | 8 Apr 2026

  • AND

  • Manager Queries | Do they have an indirect report? | No

  • AND

  • User Positions | Start Date | After | 1 Apr 2026

OR Logic

Separate rule blocks follow OR logic. Users who meet the conditions of any rule block will be included in the audience.

Example

The following audience includes users who match either of the two rule blocks:

Block 1

  • User Profile | Custom Fields | Checkbox Check | No

OR

Block 2

  • User Activity | First Login | After | 8 Apr 2026

  • AND

  • Manager Queries | Do they have an indirect report? | No

Combining AND and OR Logic

You can combine AND and OR logic within a single audience by adding multiple rule blocks, each containing one or more conditions.

Example

An audience needs to capture two different groups:

  • Users who have not completed a specific custom field check

  • OR

  • Users who joined after a certain date and do not manage indirect reports

Each group becomes its own rule block. Users who meet the conditions of either block are included in the audience.
