MCP Server

MCP server lets Super Admins connect AI tools – such as Claude, ChatGPT, or any other tool that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) – directly to Thrive. Instead of raising a request and waiting on Thrive to set up the connection, an admin can generate the credentials an AI tool needs themselves, from one screen, and get connected in minutes.

Before You Begin

  • Only Super Admins can enable the MCP server and generate or rotate its credentials.

  • Credentials are shared across your whole organisation's MCP server, not per AI tool – you'll reuse the same Server URL and Client ID for every tool you connect, generating a new Client secret only when you rotate credentials.

  • Each end user still signs in to Thrive with their own username and password, or SSO, the first time they use the connected AI tool – an AI tool only ever sees what that person could already see in Thrive.

Important:

The Client secret is only ever shown once, immediately after you enable the server or rotate credentials. Copy it somewhere safe straight away – if it's lost, you'll need to rotate credentials again to generate a new one.

Enabling the MCP Server

  1. From the Thrive menu, go to Configure > AI Features > MCP server.

  2. Click the Enable MCP server button to generate your organisation's credentials.

  3. A Copy the client secret now notice appears with your Client secret – copy it immediately, as it won't be shown again.

Connecting an AI Tool

Once enabled, the MCP server screen displays everything an AI tool needs to connect:

  • Server URL: The main MCP endpoint. Every AI tool needs this.

  • Client ID: Always visible on the screen.

  • Client secret: Generated when you enable the server or rotate credentials, and shown once only.

  • Authorisation URL and Token URL: Only needed by some AI tools.

At a minimum, any AI tool needs the Server URL, Client ID, and Client secret to connect. Some AI tools also ask for the Authorisation URL and Token URL – check your AI tool's own connector settings to see which details it needs before you start.

Enter the relevant details into your AI tool's connector or MCP settings. Each end user then signs in to Thrive with their own login the first time they use it.

Rotating Credentials

  1. In AI features > MCP server, click Rotate credentials.

  2. In the Rotate MCP credentials? confirmation, review the warning: "The current client secret stops working straight away. Every connected AI tool has to be updated with the new one." Click Rotate credentials to confirm, or Cancel to back out.

A new Client secret is generated and shown once only – copy it straight away, then update every connected AI tool with it.

Important:

Rotating credentials invalidates the old Client secret immediately. Anyone already logged in to a connected AI tool stays logged in, but new logins or expired sessions fail until that tool is updated with the new credentials.
