Tags are labels used to categorise content in Thrive, helping improve discovery and personalised recommendations. They make it easier for users to search, filter, and navigate to the content that matters most to them.
Example Usage
Tags are especially important on the Explore page, where your primary tags are displayed on the front page. This allows you to organise content clearly and guide users toward key topics or themes.
For example, clicking a primary tag like AIR PODS:
Displays its associated subcategory or secondary tag:
You’ll now see all content tagged with both AIR PODS (primary tag) and Apple Products (secondary tag):

Using Tags for New User Setup
Tags also play an important role during a new user’s profile setup. When users first create their profile, they’re asked to select at least three Skills and Topics:
Skills: Areas the user wants to develop
Topics: Subjects the user is interested in
Users can add more skills at any time by clicking the Add Skill button on their Learn profile.
Using Tags in Homepage Blocks
Tags influence the content shown on the homepage, particularly in dynamic blocks like Recommended. This block displays content that matches the skills listed in a user’s profile, helping ensure recommendations are tailored to their interests and learning goals.

Locking Tags: Skills vs. Topics
When managing your tags, you have the option to "lock" them. This behaves differently depending on whether the tag is categorised as a Topic or a Skill.
What does locking a Topic do? By default, Thrive allows your tag library to evolve organically; when a user adds a Topic as a skill on their profile, that topic can transition into a Skill for the whole organisation.
Locking a Topic prevents this transition from happening. It ensures the tag remains strictly a Topic and cannot be converted into a Skill by end-user actions.
Note:
Endorsed tags are locked by default to maintain administrative control over your core taxonomy.
What does locking a Skill do? Locking a Skill is currently an administrative signal rather than a functional restriction.
While it doesn't change how the Skill behaves for the end-user, it highlights to other platform administrators that this tag should remain a Skill.
This is particularly useful for teams with multiple admins to ensure the Skills and Topics dashboard remains consistent and aligned with your organisational strategy.
