A Smart Audience is a rule-based audience that automatically manages its own membership. Rather than adding users individually, you define the rules and Thrive handles the rest – adding and removing users dynamically as they meet or no longer meet the criteria.
To access your audiences, go to Manage > Structures & Audiences in the Thrive menu.
Creating a Smart Audience
Click Create audience.
In the Audience Name field, enter a name for your audience.
Select Smart Audience.
Click Create.
Once created, you’ll be redirected to the Settings tab to define your membership rules.
Membership Rules
The Membership rules (optional) section is where you define who belongs to the audience. If no rules are added, the audience automatically inherits all members from its parent structure. You can add rules to filter that membership down further.
Rules are organised into rule blocks. Conditions within a rule block are joined by AND – all conditions must be met. Rule blocks are joined by OR – users who meet any block's conditions are included.
To get started, click + Add a condition.
Condition Types
Each condition starts with a category. The following categories are available:
Category | Description |
|---|---|
User Positions | Targets users based on their position within the organisation |
User Activity | Targets users based on activity, such as first or last login date |
Manager Queries | Targets users based on their relationship to a manager |
User Profile | Targets users based on profile data, such as department, location, or job title |
Content | Targets users based on whether they have completed specific content items |
Content Conditions
When you select Content, choose whether the condition applies to users who have or have not completed the selected content, then select the content item or items. If you select multiple items, the condition is met if a user has completed any one of them.
You also set the completion window:
Option | Description |
|---|---|
Ever | Includes users who have completed the content at any point in time |
Since [date] | Includes only users who completed the content after a specific date |
Membership updates within 24 hours of a completion event, including historical completions and retroactive data uploads. Users are removed if their completion record is deleted.
Building Rule Logic
Use the following controls to build your rule structure:
+ Add another condition: Adds a second condition to the current rule block, joined by AND
+ Add OR rule block: Adds a new rule block, joined by OR
Clone: Duplicates a rule block
Delete block: Removes a rule block
Once your rules are set, click Save changes.
