Thrive's content language settings determine how content is displayed to users and its visibility across different areas of the platform. Understanding these settings is key to managing your content effectively for a diverse audience.
Language Configuration for Content
Thrive manages language selection for content in two ways:
Required language: For articles (and, in an upcoming update, pathways), at least one language must be selected when creating or editing the content. This ensures a default language is always present for these types.
Optional language: For other content types, the language selection can be left empty or 'null' by default. This means content can exist without a specific language assigned.
How Content Language is Determined for Display
When a user accesses content, Thrive prioritises the most appropriate language version available. The system determines which language to display based on the following hierarchy:
If the content is available in the user's preferred language, that version is displayed.
Otherwise, if the content is available in one of the user's secondary languages, the first of those available languages is used.
If neither of the above applies, the system defaults to displaying the first language set on the content itself.
How Content Card Titles Are Displayed
Content card titles shown across the platform – in search, on the home page, in Hub, and elsewhere – display in the learner's primary language. Thrive determines the title as follows:
If the learner's primary language matches the content's source language, the original title is shown.
If a manual translation exists for the learner's language, that title is used.
If no manual translation exists, the title is auto-translated.
Card titles are localised even for content types that don't support full translation, such as legacy quizzes and events. In these cases the card title is auto-translated, but the content itself remains in its source language.
Impact on Content Visibility (Homepage and Explore)
Language settings significantly influence what content is visible in specific areas of Thrive:
Homepage blocks: "Latest," "Recommended," and “Trending” blocks will only show content that is available in one of the user's preferred or secondary languages, or content that has no languages configured.
Explore page: Similarly, the Explore page will only display content to the user that is available in one of their preferred or secondary languages, or content that has no languages configured.
Important:
When a pathway that previously had no language set is updated to include a specific language, it may disappear from homepage blocks and the Explore page for some users. This occurs because the content is no longer "language-agnostic" and will now only display to users whose language preferences match the newly assigned language, ensuring relevance.
Language and Search Results
Available languages do not influence content visibility in search results or Kiki (Thrive's AI assistant). All content, regardless of its configured language, can appear in search queries.
Note:
While language settings don't affect which content appears in search, content card titles in search results display in the learner's primary language. See How Content Card Titles Are Displayed above.
